The Rig

This here is a photo of my lovely wife Jen in our back garden, kindly modeling my rig as I took some snaps, while we were shooting some test footage of our son last week.

Seeing as we had no crew for the STFU shoot, the end titles are a little bare, so I decided to list all the gear that was used on the shoot in the titles.
I'm posting that gear list here, and will in turn try to give a half decent review of each piece of kit (among others) in following blog posts.
And give me something to do while progress bars slowly inch there way to their conclusion.

  1. heh , heh , seems like we were both shooting at the same time .
There was a crew of about 15-20 on our shoot however . I was looking at that Fig Rig recently , funnily enough .Was that your own gear or rental/borrow ? .

We has a 4 day weekend ( 16 hr days ) shoot . Drove 1200kms over the weekend as well as being DP & operator so , while not having a 3 month old , I can appreciate your tiredness .

We used 2 hdv cams and so have about 15hrs of footage for a 13/14min film . Not exactly a tight shooting ratio . A lot of post to get through , but with 3 maxed out macpros at our disposal , we should get through it ok .
When can I see your film?

    Hows life dahn undah!

Yeah thats my gear, I have a good bit more, but its not listed as I didn't use it for that particular shoot.

I'll be breaking out the big guns for the next shoot (watch this space/blog).

I recommend the fig rig, you can mount anything and everything on it and customize the hell out of it, I'd say you'd never meet 2 fig rigs alike.

And, eh, I'll show you mine if you show me yours...

  3. Been editing since the shoot - there's still a lot to do before the premier (12th May approx.) . Getting through some big , tricky scenes at the moment.
It's looking pretty good though . I think it's probably a good sign when you are editing and you go , " This is so exciting , I can't wait to see what happens next!".
It's fun cutting action scenes .

I'll show you when it's done .We hope to cut a trailer before deadline but it depends on time.

48hr Film fest is on again here at about the the same weekend that we will have this finished by and are thinking of doing it again this year ( if we aren't burned out).

Go on , giz a look , you know you want to .

  4. Good to see you're rockin the film where you are.

    Is it your script/direction?

I've surmised that you we're DP/operator on the shoot and now editor.

    Your baby?

Shut The Fuck Up was merely a test shoot of the gear for the longer short that we want to do, but I'm so happy with how its turning out that I've a few festival applications in my out box. Sure its worth a try in anyways.

The finished flick will be shown in due course. I may throw up a still though.

  5. Not written , nor directed by me , ( apart from the usual suggestions and ideas that get traded over the process of film making ) , but , yeah , pretty much a collaborative effort . Mostly DP and Editor with a little art department work thrown in for me .
Some low light issues in a couple of scenes due to lying monitors etc and just difficult set ups ( caves etc.) but hopefully the folks at Natural History New Zealand - who do stuff for Discovery Channel , Animal Planet etc . - will be able to help with colour correction and we will have a few pick- ups to do too .

I have some of my own scripts close to ready to go too , so , in time , I plan to shoot those , hopefully in the next 12 months .

On the book front , I've read William Goldmans book years ago , and liked it . Also recommend "Set Up , Joke , Set Up , Joke." by Rob Long and Nobdy's Perfect , Billy Wilder bio" by Charlotte Chandler . And of course Rebel Without A Crew - but you knew that .

  6. Aye Set Up Joke, Set Up Joke is great. I got that after reading his other book Conversations With My Agent which is excellent.

I've not read any Billy Wilder stuff although I've leafed through the Cameron Crowe interview one. Looks interesting.

I've so many film related books unread I'm determined not to buy any more until I've caught up, which is moot really since I've just bought the William Goldman one.

Thing is, I haven't read a piece of fiction in years, its all been theory/interview/bio books.

I recently picked up No Country For Old Men, but again thats just to study and examine the Coen's adaption of the material into an incredible film.

As I scan my bookshelf next to me right now, there's a lot of reviews pending.

I should throw in some coffee reviews too just to even things out huh?

Your film sounds intriguing and a lot more enticing than Bray seafront...
